Composting Green Waste

Mandatory Organics Recycling

The State of California is now requiring all of us to compost our Green Waste. While R1 neighborhood have been composting organics for awhile in Redondo Beach, businesses and multi-family apartment complexes will now be recycling food waste, green waste, landscape & pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste, and food soiled paper waste that is mixed with food waste.

The purpose of these laws is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organics from landfills and expanding opportunities for recycling in California.

How will this work?

Wait, do I have to throw food waste outside every meal?

There is a handy countertop container for your organics waste.

You can request a countertop container by calling Public Works at 310-318-0686 or an internet search will yield several other options.

When does enforcement begin?

Thank you again for your keeping us informed. We are huge fans. I have a question:

Can food waste be placed in a plastic bag in the separate container to facilitate disposal with green waste (that is outside the house) or must we deal with either smells or daily washing out of the container?

Yes, food waste can be placed in a compostable bag or any CLEAR bag. Like the ones we get in produce section of the grocery store. The clear plastic bags do not need to be compostable. We wash the container and somehow the design makes the smell minimal, except in the summer. That’s an issue. So I’m glad we can use the clear bags or a compostable bags.
